Fast block partitioning scheme for chrominance intra prediction of versatile video coding standard

We present a fast block partitioning scheme for chrominance intra prediction of the Versatile Video Coding (VVC) standard. VVC adopted several innovative tools to improve coding performance compared with its predecessor standard, enabling efficient handling emerging video content such as ultra-high definition (UHD). These improvements come at cost significant increase in complexity, mainly due new structure called quadtree nested multi-type tree (QTMT), which can be applied separately luminance and components. Thus, this work proposes focusing on coding, composed splitting early termination based QTMT split decision sub-block variances. Experimental results demonstrated that proposed provides 60.03% 8.18% total encoding time savings, respectively, negligible impact 0.66% YUV-BDBR.
